The Challenger: Gavin Lucas

Running experience: Very little before I started training for Sahara... I ran regularly for a few months over 10 years ago, but since then just the odd 5k or 10k race each year.

What do you do to stay inspired/motivated?
That’s the million dollar question! Part of it is the challenge of a 250km race, ie, if I don’t train hard for it, then I will absolutely fail miserably. Also, the training makes me feel healthier, sleep better, wake up more rested, etc etc, all of which positively reinforce the activity.

One new thing you've discovered about your self
I have discovered that dramatic change is possible, with the right challenge.

Biggest fear about the upcoming race
Fear that I’ll get an injury, or be sick, or will otherwise be unable to compete.

What are you looking forward to about the race?
I’m most excited about really putting myself to the test, to see how I react.

3 things definitely being packed in your backpack
iPod for sure, something to keep the battery charged, and a good pair of sunglasses.

Favourite music to run to/ what are you putting on your iPod?
I listen to podcasts mostly... probably will download some audiobooks as well.

How do you plan to celebrate when you finish the race?
Fly home, embrace my family, plan my next challenge!
